Jonathan Berenguer, MSOL
Cofounder & Executive Director
Born and raised in The Bronx, Jonathan is passionate about giving back to his community. He entered college on a full scholarship for teaching. He earned his Bachelors degree in Environmental Science with a focus in Middle & High School Education. Instead of pursuing a career in teaching, he decided to become a high school counselor for a program called TRiO. Jonathan went back to school and earned his Masters degree in Organizational Leadership. He was then promoted to director of TRiO high school programs. He also speaks at middle schools, high schools, and colleges presenting empowerment seminars. He’s also an avid skier and ice skater.
Carlos Menendez, MSEd
Director of Training & Curriculum
Carlos earned his Masters degree at Hunter College’s School of Education. He focused his research on English Language Learners (ELLs) and serves as an advocate for his community. He works with students, parents, and other graduates to devise plans that enable ELLs to get an equitable education. He is passionate about this as he is a product of the NYC education system. Carlos is a creative individual and is well equipped to train others with the skills needed to teach diverse populations. He is currently a middle school teacher and is well versed in curriculum design and teaching strategies. He’s also a frequent traveler.
Sharon Quituisaca, BA
Tutoring Coordinator
Sharon is currently serving as a City Service Corps Member for the Children's Cabinet at New York City's Office of the Mayor, where she is a Special Projects Coordinator. She is a recent graduate of Syracuse University and has earned BAs in Sociology and Policy Studies with a concentration in Health, Education & Human Services, as well as a minor in Environment and Society. As a young Latina who grew up in the Bronx, she developed a passion for public service and engaging with her local community. She believes that everyone has a right to higher education and healthy environments for learning, and has worked as a tutor and mentor since 2015. Sharon is dedicated to inspiring younger generations and ensuring that educational resources are available to everyone. She also enjoys dancing salsa.
Leslie Vasquez, BS
Community coordinator
Leslie earned her degree from City College and majored in International Studies with a concentration in Public Policy, in hopes to change environmental law and human rights. She graduated valedictorian of her high school, worked for the TRiO program at Lehman College, the NYCLU, and currently for South Bronx Unite. She wishes to raise awareness of current issues by enabling access to resources in education, in hopes of a society comprised of empathetic, knowledgeable, and successful leaders. Leslie wishes to start making an impact in society by bridging the gap from home to school and advancing our community through By Your Side Tutoring. She also loves to bake.
